Simple Strokes Therapy: Our Story

Simple Strokes Therapy: Our Story

One of the questions we get asked often is... How did you come up with the name Simple Strokes? To answer that, I think it's important to start at the very beginning of our story.

I'm a born and raised Mississippi girl with a dream for serving children and families. My formal education is a Bachelor and Doctorate of Science in Physical Therapy. With little business background or knowledge, the dream of serving families through a private practice was never in my plan until I met my future husband, Trey. He has the most extraordinary entrepreneurial spirit that I have ever seen in a person. He is encouraging, fearless, and is not afraid to take a risk.

When Trey and I were introduced by mutual friends, I was working in a Skilled Nursing Facility and treating the pediatric population on a part-time basis. A contract position in a local school district became available, and because Trey knew I loved working with children more than anything, he encouraged me to take a risk.  This was definitely not in my nature to leave my full-time job with benefits and take a contract position which only had around 15 hours of work per week. I never viewed myself as being a risk-taker but for some reason, I listened to him and took a huge leap of faith. My contract with the school district was approved! Here is the crazy part. Within 3 months, 4 other school districts called and by the end of that same school year, I was serving 5 school districts and calling all my therapist friends looking for someone to help me with all of the work. Trey suddenly became my business advisor!

Fast forward 2 years, Trey and I were getting married and my accountant was calling with advice to incorporate my business. So, in the same year that we were married, Trey and I became partners in business. Our first baby, Simple Strokes Therapy Consultants, PA was born. We have loved, despised, nurtured, cheered, cried, and rocked this baby for 17 years now. We have been blessed with 3 beautiful children of our own and currently have a staff of 20 at Simple Strokes.

Today, Simple Strokes provides pediatric therapy services and educational resources to impact the lives of children with special needs through 2 locations in Mississippi. And to answer the question about our name, let's go back to the summer of 2003. Just before we incorporated our business, I ran a very small aquatic therapy program at a local gym and called our service, Simple Strokes. Nothing about this business journey has been Simple (ha!) and we actually do have an onsite indoor pool at our clinic. We continue to offer aquatic therapy and have broadened our services to offer PT, OT, and SLP services to children. And yes, we still contract with school districts in Mississippi including the very one that started it all for me 20 years ago!

What makes our story grand in my opinion? That we took risks together, have been blessed beyond our wildest dreams, and that we get to do what we love most - serving children and families.  After all, we are all in this together!
